Your car’s engine is a highly specialized bit of machinery, which has changed and over the years has become intricately technical.  The timing belt is a rubber belt, usually located on the front of the engine.  It controls the “timing”  or rate at which the crankshaft allows the piston to move, keeping your engine synchronized and turning at the specific speed in order to avoid damage to any of your car’s engine parts, as they all are basically interconnected.

Although every car is driven differently, and maintained differently, many newer cars timing belts can last up to 100,000 miles, while older vehicles should be replaced at about 60,000 miles.

Like many parts on  your car’s engine, the time belt is a wear item.  Easily identified and visible, you can notice belt begins to “glaze” – they appear shiny from the repetitive wear.  It’s a clear sign that it needs to be replaced.  Your car may begin to misfire or the belt will break.

Regular maintenance keeps your car running smooth and extends the life of your vehicle.  When you bring your car in for a service or repair, we check your hoses and belts for signs of eminent malfunction. A good example:  if your car needs a new water pump, we have to take off the timing belt to get to the pump, so a new belt is installed.  It’s a subtle change, but to your car it makes a big difference.

A well maintained car will last much longer than one that is neglected, and ultimately is much cheaper to maintain than it is to replace the car.
