Crofton is a planned community in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, located just west of Annapolis and not far from both Washington, D.C. and Baltimore. A population of nearly 30,000 people live in Crofton, across a land area of 6.6 square miles. Money Magazine once named Crofton as one of the 100 best places to live in the United States.
Crofton was founded in the fall of 1964, built by the Crawford Corporation. The name Crofton comes from a small township in Cumberland County, England. The new town’s English name was chosen for sounding well and implying a pleasant place to live. Crofton was originally anchored by a community golf course which later became the Crofton Country Club.
The town made national headlines in 2002 when a snakehead fish was discovered in a local pond and determined to be an invasive species. This incident inspired several movies. Meanwhile, Whites Hall Farm, the birthplace of John Hopkins, is one of many attractions in Crofton.
